How to set up a Slack integration

If you're part of a team or supervising it, it can be tricky to keep track of the chart creations of your team members. That's why we offer a Slack integration for all our users, including users on a free plan.

A Slack integration will notify you in a Slack channel of your choice whenever a chart created by your team is published or republished:

To set up a Slack integration, go to your account settings in Datawrapper and select your team. This will bring you to your team settings. Now click on Integrations, then click on Enable Slack integration:

You will be prompted to add a Webhook URL. You can learn how to get one in this Slack How-To, or you follow this guide. It's a process that involves quite some steps, but it's simple and you won't need to code.

1
To get a Webhook URL, Slack asks you to create a Slack App first. This will be the app that posts in the channel whenever a Datawrapper chart is published or republished.

To create the app, go to api.slack.com/apps/new  and click on Create an App:
2
Now give your app a name (like "Datawrapper Chart Notifier") and click on Create App:
3
This will bring you to the settings page of your new app. Here, select Incoming Webhooks:
4
You'll land on a page called "Incoming Webhooks". On the right to "Activate Incoming Webhooks", click the toggle to On: Scroll down to the button Add New Webhook to Workspace and click it to create the new Webhook URL that Datawrapper needs to set up the notifications.
5
A popup opens. Here you can choose the channel where you want to post the notifications. We chose a channel called "published-chart". Click on Allow:
6
Once you've done that, you'll find yourself back on the "Incoming Webhooks" page. Here you finally get the Webhook URL that Slack generated for you. Click on Copy, then copy it into the Datawrapper settings page:

7

And that's it! Go to your Slack channel and you'll find that you "added an integration to this channel". Try to publish or re-publish a chart, map or table and you'll get a notification from the Slack app you set up. The link leads you directly to a chart preview.

Congrats on your first Slack app and Webhook URL you created! If you have any remaining questions, let us know at support@datawrapper.de.
